The simple cube-shape maximizes the square footage and function on a minimal budget. Designed by Substance Architecture for a family looking to downsize, the house features a simple galvanized metal tube for the interior wrapping, its two ends feature floor to ceiling glass walls that capture a view of a pond at one end and the meadow, in this 4 acre pastoral site, at the other end.

Two glass walls on its facades on the metal wall sides, do not only glow beautifully at nights but also create a passive solar house when their designs are combined with the house’s orientation. The Farmhouse cottage style home features an open plan interior with wood flooring and double height ceiling for the living room, this bright and airy interior is complemented with a beautiful fireplace. Green Home Design with Spacious Interior in La Jolla, California

7200-sq ft abandoned lot is large, so when the architect Jonathan Segal built his home and office on this lot, he could had anything necessary to build a great home and even more, he saw the potential of the lot and utilize it to create The "Prospect Residence. "  This home at least has three main characters, first is the energy efficient. This home features off-the-grid power source with its solar panels. The second is the home is space efficient, the U-shaped box gives the home maximum interior space for the available area. Although the site is large, but the architect has managed to create a spacious interior with open concept, the architect designed the stair at the end of the first floor while locating the living rooms and the kitchen on the same floor without any boundaries / wall. While the first floor is clad in glass, the upper level is enclosed from the public view with its stucco façade and the corten steel since this level houses private areas, bedrooms with balcony and ensuite for each room. The master bedroom is located on the top floor and features beautiful beach views and sun. For the last, Mr Segal has also managed to make the building cost efficient although aesthetically, the wall decoration and the outdoor fireplace do make the home looks luxurious. Home Renovation into a Modern Green Home in California

The difficulties in finding an empty lot has made the architect Jeremy Levine bought the existing house to renovate, "Every architect dreams of designing their own house, but finding an empty lot in Los Angeles is almost impossible, so my wife and I decided to buy a 'fixer' that I could transform," Says Levine.

There were two main problems to be solved (apart from the “green” aspects) first is adding some space without cutting existing trees and making the 1,100-sq feet home feel spacious. The 400-sq feet addition for the house is built around the existing trees since the lot is surrounded by them. "Since we loved the trees, we decided to build the addition around them, enclosing them into open courtyard spaces," says Levine making every room in the house opens to an outdoor space dominated by a tree. While making the outdoor area green, the architect also complemented the trees with gray water recycling and storm-water collection system.

To make the home feel big, Levine even removed some closets, building storage underground using concealed trap door and carved the thick walls throughout the house to become shelves rather than buying shelves and making the space feels even smaller. “We also built custom furniture out of the recycled lumber, including an office with desks and shelves hung from threaded rods," explain Levine.
The green feature of the house are solar panels, a thermal rock wall, evaporative cooling fountain and mobile sun screens for passive climate control. There are also natural day lighting, grey-water recycling and rain-water collection systems, hot water on-demand, Xeriscaping, a leach field; recycled fly ash concrete, reclaimed lumber, thermal chimney, a green roof, and low-VOC paint.

About the house’s design, the architect explains; "The design plays on the idea of a ‘Regional Modernism’ by merging two of the local architectural styles of the region: the language of thick walls an and carved mass of the Spanish Colonial tradition and the modern abstraction and open space of the Case Study tradition."  This house is Located in Eagle Rock, California - a suburb of L.A and if you want more information about the house, you could visit Jeremy Levine Design Via.
