This residential is actually a converted abandoned cement factory found in 1973, partially in ruins and comprised anything a cement factory had, underground galleries, over 30 silos and huge engine room. According to the information provided by Katerina Xynogala, the founder of Room Service, as it is featured in Room Service catalogue, Architect Ricardo Bofill bought this factory and began the renovation, the aim was to create an architectural office for him, archives, an exhibition space and a model laboratory. Having a huge space with its own character, he decided to preserve some original characters, modifying the brutality, and creating some new elements by demolishing some structures, cleaning cement, exposing previously concealed structures and creating the landscape architecture in the former factory yard by planting plants like palms, eucalyptus, cypresses and olive trees. The two year transformation with the help of Catalan craftsmen has transformed the factory into new elements like the cathedral, silos, and the garden, but the home / office design is preserved as unfinished work. To maintain the unfinished looking, the architect and the owner of this unique residential and architecture office matches the new modernist elements with the original style, like the tall curtains, rugs with less detailing, the long conference table with its leather seating and the way the architects decorate the architecture office interior with the pictures, the paradoxical stairs which climb to nowhere or plants. “to be an architect means to understand space, to understand space organized by man, to decipher the spontaneous movements and behavior of people, and to detect the needs of change that they might unconsciously express. It is essential to track down these issues if we want to contribute with our personal work to the history of architecture,” says Ricardo Bofill who lives and works in this amazing home.
